As a clinical member of the Assisted Living Services team, one of my jobs is to conduct in-home assessments for new home care clients. During a recent new client interview, the family told me a story about the last caregiver who worked for them. The family stated that the caregiver, who was placed by a Connecticut-based home care agency, was hurt while caring for their loved one, and received medical attention related to the injury. Subsequently, the client’s family began receiving bills to cover the expenses of the injured caregiver. When the family contacted the home care agency, they discovered that the client was not covered by workers’compensation through the agency, and, because the injury happened in their home, the family was responsible for all of the worker’s medical bills.
This story demonstrates the importance of asking key questions of your home care agency prior to signing a contract. Questions like, “Are all of your direct care staff W-2 employees of your agency?” and “Are all of your employees covered by workers’ compensation insurance?”
The family was comforted to know that Assisted Living Services, Inc. covers all employees with workers’ compensation insurance. To learn more about our quality assurance measures, click here.
